Your First 7 Days in North Cyprus

A theme-based checklist for your first week in North Cyprus: SIM card, bank account, transport, university enrolment, money, and plug type.

If you have just arrived in North Cyprus, your first week is busy. The lists below are grouped by theme, not by day order — prioritise them for your own situation. No figures or rules are hard-coded here; for current values you are pointed to the relevant data and official pages.

Staying connected: SIM card and internet

For longer stays, a local mobile line is usually cheaper than roaming on your home-country number. One of the local operators is North Cyprus Turkcell (KKTCELL). More than one operator is active; confirm the current operator and package list through official channels.

KKTCELL lets you order a prepaid/tourist line online in advance and collect it at the Turkcell service centre at Ercan Airport. Placing the online order does not by itself activate the line; it is switched on only after delivery, identity verification, and the contract steps. The operator's online form asks for a Turkish national ID number, so the flow appears geared to Turkish citizens — if you are not one, ask the operator which document and channel (store/dealer) you can register through.

Bank account

Practices for opening an account and the documents required vary by bank; some branches work by appointment, others by queue. A dedicated banking guide is being prepared separately.

The TRNC Central Bank's list of licensed banks (list) includes 23 banks; full branch addresses and phone numbers are on the Central Bank's bank branches page. Some banks on the Central Bank's licensed list have branches on or near university campuses, which can be convenient if you are a student:

Getting around

City and intercity buses and shared taxis (dolmuş) exist; however, there is no single central official source for routes and timetables.

North Cyprus uses the British-style Type G socket with three flat pins. Round-pin plugs from Turkey and continental Europe do not fit directly; bring a Type G adapter or buy one locally.

FAQ

Should I carry cash on arrival, or is a card enough?

Carry a small amount of Turkish Lira in cash for your first days; buses, small shops, and some kiosks may not always take cards. Card acceptance varies by business. You can exchange currency at the airport or banks and withdraw Lira from ATMs.

Are the power sockets different here?

Yes. North Cyprus uses the British-style Type G socket with three flat pins; round-pin plugs from Turkey or continental Europe do not fit directly. Bring a Type G adapter or buy one locally.

Where do I get a SIM card?

You can buy a line from the stores of the local mobile operators in North Cyprus. Registration usually requires ID or a passport. Confirm current packages and registration rules directly through the operator's official channels.

Can I open a bank account in my first week?

Accounts are generally opened in-branch by appointment or in a queue, and required documents vary by bank. University enrolment and residence steps may take priority in the first week; ask your university's student office for guidance on opening an account.
