Buses, Dolmuşes and Taxis in North Cyprus
North Cyprus has no single transit authority or fare app: intercity buses, airport transfers, university shuttles and city dolmuşes are each run by a different operator. What is verified about routes, hours and contacts for İtimat, AKVA, KIBHAS, university shuttles, city minibuses and taxis — and what still needs a phone call.
North Cyprus has no single public transport authority and no combined fare or timetable source. Intercity routes are run by private bus companies, the airport transfer by a separate company (KIBHAS), university shuttles by the universities themselves, and city transport by municipalities or independent minibus operators. The TRNC Public Information Office's transport page confirms that buses from the five district terminals — Lefkoşa (Nicosia), Girne (Kyrenia), Gazimağusa (Famagusta), Güzelyurt and Lefke — connect all regions, but it does not publish routes, schedules or fares. What follows is compiled from each operator's own pages and official sources; some details still require a phone call to the operator.
Intercity buses
İtimat — Famagusta-Nicosia route
İtimat Otobüş runs hourly departures on this route, daily from 07:00 to 19:00, carrying roughly 200,000 passengers a year (source: itimatgroup.com). Tickets are sold as a QR code through the AdaKart mobile app, or in cash/by card at İtimat's offices; a QR ticket must be used the same day.

- Nicosia office — Lefkoşa Central Terminal; tel 0392 227 16 17 / +90 533 820 16 66

Schedules and fares are set by the operator and can change — confirm current details on İtimat's own site or at its offices.
AKVA — Kyrenia-Nicosia and Güzelyurt-Lefke routes
AKVA (Yorulmaz AKVA Ulaşım Hizmetleri) runs intercity routes connecting Nicosia, Kyrenia, Güzelyurt and Lefke, and also operates the METU NCC campus shuttle under a separate university contract. AKVA's own site (akvabus.com) was unreachable when this guide was prepared, so route, schedule and fare details could not be verified. Confirm current departures at an AKVA terminal counter in the relevant city, or directly with the operator.
Other operators
Other intercity companies named at the terminals: Çimen, Kombos, Girneliler Seyahat, Asbestos. Most have no independent website — a terminal counter or phone booking is the standard way to check schedules.
Ercan Airport transfer (KIBHAS)
KIBHAS runs services between Ercan Airport and Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta, Güzelyurt and Lefke within a 05:00-18:30 window (source: Ercan Airport's official site, Passenger Services → Public Transport). There is no fixed timetable: departures are built around flight arrival and departure times, with extra runs added around holidays and university term dates. Call KIBHAS's Ercan office or check its mobile app for the current schedule.

- Nicosia Central Terminal — +90 533 870 78 45
- Kyrenia (in front of the Colony Hotel) — +90 533 870 78 46
- Famagusta Official Terminal — +90 533 870 78 47
- Güzelyurt-Lefke Terminal — +90 533 870 78 49

The first 2 bags up to 30 kg total travel free; children under 5 travel free, and a paid seat is required from age 5 up. There is no KIBHAS service after 18:30 — a night arrival means taxi or private transport. For the rest of what's available at the airport (taxi rank, car rental desks, currency exchange), see Ercan Airport: Contact, Terminal Facts and Getting Out.
University shuttles
University shuttles are separate systems from the intercity operators, open only to that university's own students.
EMU/DAÜ (Famagusta): Because roughly 60% of students live scattered across the city, EMU provides transport free to all of its students, on five main city routes — Salamis Road, Maraş, Deniz Tesisleri, Zabitler Kulübü, and Lefkoşa Yolu — plus hourly ring services within campus (more frequent at peak times). METU NCC (Güzelyurt): The campus shuttle is operated by AKVA, with services between campus and Ercan, Nicosia and Kyrenia; schedules change by academic term — check with the university's transportation office for current times. Campus gates are A1 (about 6 km from central Güzelyurt) and A2 (about 1 km from Kalkanlı village); the short A2 distance means a taxi from Güzelyurt is also workable. Parking stickers are issued to staff only, not students. Source: ncc.metu.edu.tr.
NEU/YDÜ (Nicosia): The university runs its own bus garage and shuttle service, booked through bus.neu.edu.tr. That booking site was inaccessible when this guide was prepared, so route, schedule and fare details could not be verified — confirm directly with the university.
City transport: dolmuş, minibus, municipal shuttle
Kyrenia (Girne): A dolmuş/minibus network operates. On the Kyrenia-Bellapais route, for example, departures toward Baldöken run hourly from 10:00 to 19:00 and toward Bellapais from 10:30 to 19:30; city routes generally run every 20-30 minutes.
Nicosia (Lefkoşa): City buses are run by OSEL, with a central terminal at Küçük Kaymaklı. Service thins out after 19:00.
Famagusta (Gazimağusa): The municipality runs a free "flexible public transport" service: a weekly Old City ↔ Derinya border-crossing route Wednesday to Sunday, a market-to-city-centre connection, and a Maraş area line. Source: gazimagusabelediyesi.org.
General hours: In all three cities, service thins out or stops after 19:00-20:00; a taxi or private car is the standard fallback at night.
Payment: Cash to the driver is common; some routes have a card terminal. On the İtimat route, tickets can be pre-purchased as a QR code through the AdaKart mobile app.
Taxis
Taxis use a meter, with separate day and night (22:00-06:00) rates. A meter fare is standard for short city trips; for intercity distances, some drivers offer a fixed price instead of running the meter. No verified, current fare table was found while preparing this guide — confirm the price, or that the meter is running, before you get in.
Companies operating include Girne Taksi, İstanbul Express Taksi and Kuzey Kıbrıs Taşkan Taksi; most take phone or app bookings. Ercan Airport's taxi rank operates 24 hours (source: Ercan Airport's Passenger and Visitor Guide).

FAQ
Is there one app or timetable for buses in North Cyprus?
No. The TRNC Public Information Office confirms that buses from the five district terminals (Lefkoşa, Girne, Gazimağusa, Güzelyurt, Lefke) connect all regions, but publishes no combined route, timetable or fare list. Each operator (İtimat, AKVA, KIBHAS and others) runs its own schedule — call the operator or ask at the terminal counter for current times.
How often do buses run between Famagusta and Nicosia?
İtimat Otobüş runs hourly departures on this route daily from 07:00 to 19:00 (source: itimatgroup.com). Tickets can be bought as a QR code through the AdaKart mobile app or in person at İtimat's offices.
How do I get from Ercan Airport to a city by bus?
KIBHAS runs services from Ercan to Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta, Güzelyurt and Lefke within a 05:00-18:30 window. There is no fixed timetable — departures are built around flight arrival and departure times. Call KIBHAS's Ercan office (+90 533 870 78 48) or check its mobile app for current departures. For the rest of what's available at the airport, see the Ercan Airport guide.
Do universities run their own transport, separate from city buses?
Yes. EMU (DAÜ) provides free transport for all its own students on five city routes plus campus ring services. METU NCC's campus shuttle is operated by AKVA. These services are only open to students of the university that runs them — students elsewhere use the intercity operators.
Can I count on public transport late at night?
Generally no. City minibuses and dolmuşes in most places thin out or stop around 19:00-20:00. A taxi or private car is the standard option after that.
How are taxi fares set?
Taxis use a meter, with separate day and night rates (night from 22:00 to 06:00); this guide doesn't list amounts because no verified official fare table was found. For intercity distances, confirm the price with the driver before you get in.
